Door Latch Catch

If your outswing bookcase door does not close completely flush at the top, the issue is typically caused by slight irregularities in the wall opening rather than a defect in the door itself. Because outswing bookcase doors mount the case molding directly to the moving bookcase assembly, they require a more precise opening than a traditional door.

In some installations, the bottom portion of the case molding may contact the wall before the top section closes, preventing the upper portion of the door from sitting fully flush with the wall.

This condition is most commonly caused by jobsite conditions such as openings that are slightly out of square, out of plumb, out of level, or walls that are not perfectly in plane. Minor structural movement in wood-framed homes can also affect the reveal gap over time as materials expand and contract with seasonal temperature and humidity changes.

To correct this condition, a simple hinge-side adjustment is usually all that is required. By slightly adjusting the bottom hinge side away from the wall, the door alignment can be tuned so the top closes flush and the reveal appears even.

Make small adjustments gradually and recheck the door fit until the desired alignment is achieved.

For customers who want additional holding pressure at the top of the door, Maderra also offers an optional pressure latch / door closer designed specifically for single outswing bookcase doors. This accessory mounts at the top of the unit and helps maintain a flush appearance while still allowing the door to open easily with a push or pull.

In rare cases where the wall or opening is significantly out of plumb or out of plane, hinge adjustment alone may not fully correct the condition. In these situations, the surrounding framing or wall surface may need to be corrected before final door tuning can be completed.
