How to Measure Your Door Opening
To ensure your hidden bookcase door fits perfectly, please follow these simple steps when measuring your Rough Opening (RO):
Measure from the door jamb — not the door stop.
The door stop will be removed when we install the prehung door frame, so please measure only from jamb to jamb.Take two measurements:
RO Width: from the inside of one door jamb to the inside of the opposite jamb.
RO Height: from the floor to the bottom of the top jamb.
Submit your exact measurements.
Once we receive your measurements, Maderra will automatically deduct ¾” from the height and ¼” from the width.
This provides the necessary clearance and adjustment space for smooth installation of the prehung door frame.
See video:
Clearance Reduction by Swing Type
Inswing Doors: Reduce the walkthrough width by approximately 5.7 inches.
Example: A 36-inch RO will provide a 30.3-inch walkthrough opening.
Outswing Doors: Reduce the walkthrough width by approximately 12.5 inches.
Example: A 36-inch RO will provide a 23.5-inch walkthrough opening.
Will a Hidden Bookcase Door work in my opening?
Yes. Our hidden bookcase doors work in all three layouts shown.
Flush opening (flat wall)
Use our Flush-Mount Hidden Door.
The unit can be built outswing or inswing. See clearances below.
Single-side return (one short wall at the opening)
Installs the same as a flush opening.
Choose outswing or inswing and follow the required clearances.
Hallway / recessed (three-sided return)
At the hallway entrance: treat it like a flush opening.
Inside the hallway: you must frame a proper rough opening inside the corridor with a header and jack studs so the prehung unit and casing can fasten securely. Provide at least 2.5 inches of jack-stud width around your door entry.
Swing options
- Outswing: the bookcase swings toward you as you enter the room/hallway.
- Inswing: the bookcase swings away from you into the next room/hallway.
Minimum side clearances (critical)
These allow solid fastening to the jack stud and room for casing around the opening.
- Outswing: 2.5 inches minimum clearance from the adjacent return/side wall.
- Inswing: 4.5 inches minimum clearance from the adjacent return/side wall.
Framing & Clearance Requirements
For proper installation, all Maderra doors must be installed in a standard framed opening that includes a header and jack studs on both sides.Wall thickness: A minimum of 2.5″ is required to install casing and trim around the door entry.
Inswing doors: Require at least 4.5″ of clearance from any wall or obstruction on the side the door swings into. This ensures the door can open fully into the room.
Outswing doors: Require a minimum wall thickness of 2.5″ for proper installation and casing placement.
Hallway installations: If your door will be placed in a hallway, it still be framed with jack studs and a header, and may require custom adjustments to fit the space properly.
